WORKS

THE ALL WOVEN (2020)

GRADUATION PROJECT

As often in the development of an idea or a project, there is an experimental and simple starting point from which it all begins. My work “The All Woven” likewise emerges from research sparked by a simple question “Would it be possible to weave a sofa?“

“The All Woven” is an upholstered work that is entirely woven on a customized loom. For this reason, the work emerges seamless, without stitches, glue, or any other affixing agent. In contrast to the industrial process of upholstery production where the fabric must be woven, cut, sewn, and stuffed in order to achieve form and dimension, “The All Woven” reduces the process by focusing on the most elemental step: the weaving.

A primary aim for the project was to establish an alliance between crafts and industry. Through the act of experimentation, I began to deconstruct my technical knowledge of the craft and rethink the methods of construction. In so doing, I was able to filter out which specific qualities and possibilities could be offered through the samples, allowing them to become the trigger for an entirely new method. Necessarily then, a new loom was required to implement my idea. In order to transition from 2-D to 3-D weaving, I “modified” two classical countermarch looms, which I used as the foundational structure upon which to assemble a modified loom.

In traditional weaving, you have two systems that, by interlacing rectangularly, create the weave of a fabric: the threads set on the loom - called the warp - and the threads (materials) inserted between the partly lifted warp threads, which is called the weft. In addition to creating my own method and customized loom, I inverted the hierarchical order and traditional function of the warp and the weft, giving them a new function by using a part of the weft as a warp to create the strap of the upholstery.

The All Woven” is thus an object that derives its versatility and originality from its simplicity; it is a piece that may be folded in many ways or simply be left open.

ORDRE COULANT (2019)

PORCELAIN AND GLASS

Serie of porcelain surfaces with docking , mouth-blown glass objects.
Ordre Coulant is a research on baroque table culture , and the rooting of the art of glass-bowing and porcelain.

The baroque table required diligent and well-conceived preparation. An inconspicuous trick played a special role here. In order to guarantee the precise alignment of all elements distributed according to a fixed plan, the tablecloth was first given a small kink. The table being laid, it became indiscernible, but remained the deciding factor for the composition of the whole table.
In Ordre Coulant this auxiliary structure, which can also stand for the invisible servants, comes to the fore and becomes a visible actor. The kink now appears as a free, flowing shape, and the other elements adapt to it.

By allowing the materials to find their way “to form themselves throughout themselves “ and let them “go to where they naturally want to go “, a new game emerges, rules and hierarchies are reversed and the objects enter into new relations.

With special thanks to Peter Kuchinke.

SOMETHING IN BETWEEN(2017)

RESEARCH / FLOATING CARPET

Something in between is a work that wants to virtualize the space between water and air, by creating a floating carpet which roots in a interdisciplinary research on the behavior and characteristics of bladderwrack.
